What did i learn? What could i have done better?

Since beginning the multimedia section of my course i have learn a lot of new techniques that i believe will help me develop into a better journalist. For example when having to gather 'vox pops' from the general public or people around the UCA campus i learnt how to approach people in a way that isn’t intimidating and will make then want to participate. When approaching people you don’t know it is important to have a friendly smile and explain to them what would be expected of them. Never approach people on the phone or who look like they are in a hurry as they will more than likely be annoyed that you have interrupted them.

I also learnt how font size and article size is very important when in comes to putting together one page of a newspaper. It took a lot of time to create columns big enough to fit all of the text in and still make the page layout look good. When it comes to word limits that one extra word can mess up the whole layout of a page. So it resulting in a lot of unimportant sentences being cut out.
In the TV section of my course i realised how important enunciation is as it is important that when delivering news stories every word is heard and understood by the audience. When filming my piece to camera in parts my head was down to read the script which means the audience would not be able to fully take in what i am saying. Therefore if i was able to redo that shot i would have the script held up behind the camera like an auto queue in order to keep eye contact with the camera.

What i think i could have done better would have been the focus of the camera on our TV news video. I think certain shots were out of frame and shaky. This could have been prevented if we would have used a tripod to help frame the shots better and it would have kept the camera steady whilst filming. I also think with our radio pod casts we should have chosen a quieter location to interview as in our final piece we still had a lot of background noise such as the bus stopping.

Is it good to be different?

All our lives our parents and teachers tell us to be different but is that acceptable in society these days? This popped into my head due to the recent events on the x factor. Cher Lloyd has probably been the most talked about contestant all year. She wowed the judges in her first performance but the public have shown very mixed opinions whilst she has been in the live shows. The judges on the show such as Danni have praised Cher when she sings ballads yet when she sings her style of music she gets highly criticised. Cher is only 17 and she has had more negative press than good press. What bothers me is what is this doing to Cher mentally. She is a young woman trying to do what she does best and she is constantly being shaped into an act she isn't. I admire her determination, she seems to bounce back up as soon as something knocks her down.

Rise in student fees

The main news this week is about the dramatic increase of student fees from the current £3000 per year to up to £9000. As we saw from the protests last week this news has cause upraw. But the question that remains in my head is do students actually think about the costs when they apply to universities? The way the student fees work is that you dont actually pay back a penny of your loan until you are earning a stable amount each month and if you move abroad you dont have to pay back the loan at all. So with those points in mind i think that students think about now rather than the future in that they have the money now and its a long way off before they actually have to pay the money back. However these increase in fees will leave many students in debt for many years after graduation and could leave them unable to pay for things such as weddings and properties in later life.
